Make your deck a private oasis

Are you a lover of the great outdoors? If you prefer to spend your time at home soaking up the breeze and tranquillity, rather than sitting inside on the couch, you’re going to want a nice outdoor area to relax in.

While your deck area can be the feature of your home, it can be just as easily ruined by poor design and nosy neighbours. Whether you’ve already got a deck and want to make it more private or you’re looking to have a secluded outdoor escape constructed, there’s a number of things you need to consider before the first nail is hammered. Luckily, we’ve got a few tips for turning your lifeless deck into a peaceful escape.

Use your home

If you are considering constructing a deck, you need to take into account the design of your home while doing so. You want to have the best views possible, while keeping things relatively private. Extending the roof over your deck will make it feel more integrated, perfect for the indoor-outdoor style of living that’s very popular right now.

Don’t be a tree killer!

If you’re looking to construct or extend your deck, but there’s a big old tree in the way, don’t worry! Instead of heading for the chainsaw, think about incorporating this into the deck itself. This will give it a truly unique and natural feel, while providing cover and privacy.

Pergola

Adding a pergola to any deck is essential. The pergola will make your deck more cosy, provide shade and will enable your timber deck to last longer. Consider hanging baskets for a more natural and intimate finish.

Water fountain

Not all privacy needs are visual. If you’re looking to isolate your deck from the background noises of busy road or noisy neighbours, consider adding a water feature. This will give your deck a focal point and the sound of water will make for a more tranquil feel—definitely better to the ears than passing traffic!

Trees instead of fences

If you’re worried about any wandering eyes invading your privacy, you don’t have to surround your outdoor area in ugly high fences. By planting evergreens or large tropical trees, you can not only make your property feel more homely, but will give it a more secluded feel. Just be careful not to block out the view!

Awnings

Available in a variety of styles and colours, awnings offer great protection from the hot tropical sun and cool winter winds. Whether it’s for weather, privacy or aesthetic reasons, awnings are a must for all decks.
