We all know the terrible feeling of opening our kitchen cupboard only to see ants crawling all over everything. If you’re sick of these little critters running amok in your home, maybe it’s time you did something about it! From baits and insect sprays to powders and natural repellents, there’s a range of options available to help eradicate those unwanted nasties. Whether you want to safeguard your home before they’re an issue, or you’ve got an infestation and need help fast, we’ve got a few tips to help keep your Wyong home ant free.

Prevention

First and foremost, you want to take your home off their radar. One of the main reasons ants invade is in search of food. Sweeping floors, cleaning counters, putting dirty dishes away and keeping food sealed, are all ways to keep your home free from infestation.

Wash them away

Have you ever wondered why ants walk in a single file? Well, it’s actually because they leave a scented trail that makes it easy for other ants to follow. By using everyday cleaning products, you’re able to wipe away this trail and make the surface unpleasant for ants to use.

Powder their tracks

Certain powders make it hard for ants to breathe. You can repel ants by powdering their tracks with everyday food items items like black pepper, nutmeg, cayenne pepper, baby powder or table salt.

Natural options

You can also deter ants by leaving a bowl of natural repellents where the ants are most prevalent. These natural repellents include raw garlic slices, mint leaves, used coffee grounds and cinnamon sticks.

Kill the colony

Much of the food ants find is picked up and taken back to their colony. Using this knowledge to your advantage, go to your local supermarket and pick up some ant bait. Place it in a closed container with holes where the ants are most prevalent. The ants will then take the poison back to their nest for the all the other ants (including the queen) to ingest. For a DIY alternative to ant bait, use two tablespoons of boric acid mixed with peanut butter.

Block the entrances

While ants are tiny, there still needs to be some kind of entrance point for them to find their way into your home. Using caulk (also known as a sealant), seal your windows, doors and other cracks. This will give the ants no other option but to head in the opposite direction.
