When it comes to turf, it’s a “no brainer” that once laid, your turf will need watering. But keeping your turf lush and green all year round does require some basic knowledge, such as how much water is necessary, and when the optimal watering times are.

Turf maintenance is serious business in Australia. In most Australian homes backyard cricket is a popular and highly political pastime, generally requiring some weighty decisions by umpires, (mum or dad), when arguments break out, to avoid bat and ball fatalities occurring amongst the kids!

To ensure your turf is maintained in prime condition for backyard cricket — as well as to make your neighbours jealous — follow these simple and easy turf irrigation tips!

#1 Best Times To Water Your Turf

While running the sprinkler at night is great for convenience, it can lead to turf diseases such as fungus or mildew developing. It’s best to water between 6am – 10am in the morning, or if this is not possible 4pm – 7pm late afternoon/early evening. This ensures you’re missing the hottest part of the day, between 11am – 3pm, when water is more likely to evaporate.

#2 Water Your Lawn Regularly

Make sure that you are watering your turf regularly, generally at least twice a week. Watering time varies between 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the pressure of your hose or sprinkler system, and it is essential to check and see that this is distributing the water evenly. If you water your turf frequently, but too lightly, it can result in your lawn growing a shallow root system, that won’t fare well in the hotter seasons.

#3 Measure The Water Level In Your Lawn

While watering your turf regularly is essential, you also need to check that your turf is getting the right amount of water. Different types of turf require more or less water, but half an inch of water dispersed twice a week will keep most turf varieties green and lush. Use a water gauge to determine if your turf is receiving the right amount of water, either by watering or rainfall, which can be purchased from most hardware’s or garden centres.

*It is necessary to refer to any council water restrictions for your area before irrigating your turf.
