Pool Fencing Has Standards

Your swimming pool should be your private oasis. But you’re going to end up in deep water if your pool fence doesn’t measure up. There are safety standards and laws for this, covering pool fences built from any number of materials. Let’s take a close look at some of the options available when selecting your pooling fencing.

Your Pool Fence Starts Here

Your local council is the place to start. It’s where you can learn all about the regulations governing pool fencing in your area.

Fences need to satisfy a minimum height requirement — no less than 1200mm in height.

Horizontal structural members on pool fences need to be more than 900mm apart to comply with strict Australian safety standards. Vertical members structural cannot be more than 100mm apart and any gap below the fence cannot be greater than 100mm.

Mortar lines in brickwork offer another opportunity for young feet to gain purchase in order to clamber up and over. There are provisions in the regulations for this, as well as for objects or landforms within the “climbing zone”.

All of these safety standards are, of course, in place to frustrate the efforts of curious children who might think the world revolves around them. (Bless.)
